The Who, What, and Why of Paypal
Lately I have dealt with a lot of advertisers who use Paypal. I, like many of you, have been aware of Paypal for quite a while. Thanks to Amazon.com, Ebay, and other such sites, Paypal has achieved a great degree of name recognition. Since entering this industry, I realize now the importance of discovering the functionality of the entities that exist on the Web. I decided recently to research the services that Paypal offers, and the benefits to doing business through their portal. We are now in the middle of the busiest retail season of the year, and being aware of various buying options can help ensure safe, secure holiday shopping transactions.
According to Wikipedia, Paypal is an e-commerce business that allows the secure transfer of money across the internet. Started in 1998, and acquired by Ebay in 2002, its’ offices are located in San Jose, CA. According to Alexa, the web traffic ranking company, (www.alexa.com,) Paypal is 43rd in the world in terms of traffic volume. Paypal is available for use by individual customer, or business. As stated on their website: “Why do so many public and private organizations trust PayPal? It's simple. PayPal is a safer, faster way to get paid online. And with our low fees, it's also one of the most affordable.”
So why use Paypal? Well, don’t take my word for it. A good review of Paypal services comes from Henry Brown, on MoneySmartLIfe.com: “For vendors, this is a cheaper and easier system than creating a merchant account for credit card processing. For spenders, it’s easier to have one type of payment system. Paypal users enter in a credit or debit card number and the funds are taken from that card. This is a free service for the majority of users…”
So how do I get my money? I imagine those who may still be a bit unfamiliar with Paypal are asking this question now. Website owners would simply attach a Paypal button to their site. A surfer adds product to their cart, selects paypal as their payment option, and checks out to complete the transaction. The money is initially received into the merchants paypal account but can then be transferred to their personal bank account. For more details, PayPal’s site features a great step-by-step tutorial on how their system works. Well, what about online protection? Security online is a major concern, for both businesses and the individual customer, and according to Dr. Ralph Wilson, on Wilsonweb.com, Paypal is leading the way. How well are merchants and customers protected through PayPal? Dr. Wilson writes. “Quite well, it appears to me. First, the order form that pops up to take the customer's credit card uses PayPal's SSL (secure sockets layer) secure server. With PayPal, the merchant doesn't need a secure server, only a standard website. PayPal provides the secure order form.”
Dr. Wilson continues: “PayPal members, both sellers and buyers, are also covered by PayPal's contract with Travelers Insurance for up to $100,000 for unauthorized withdrawals from the PayPal account.” And finally, “PayPal allows merchants to specify exactly what kinds of payments they will and will not accept: non-confirmed addresses, unverified users, international users, unconfirmed bank accounts, Web Accept and instant purchase payments, and payments using the "Send Money" capability on the PayPal website. This allows merchants to determine their own levels of risk.”
According to their website, Paypal allows for transactions that do not require any of your bank or credit card numbers to be seen, and protects you from unauthorized payment. Paypal has several security checks in order for a vendor to be a Verified seller. Paypal also employs several hundred technicians who work solely on fraud protection.
Mr. Brown continues by saying, “Generally, you should feel pretty secure using Paypal. The value in Paypal is that it is actually more secure: instead of plugging in sensitive financial info on an unverified website, you can pay through Paypal and feel more secure about the transaction.”
Paypal is also a worldwide company that accepts 22 currencies. In our global economy, this can be a big factor on your bottom line. So what does this mean for Pay-per-click advertisers? Having a secure check out page is a must in order advertise any site with 7search that requests confidential information, because we take fraud very seriously. Paypal can be an option for you.
Paypal is efficient, secure, and easy to use for all types of users. You may have only known it by reputation, but you may know a little more now than just the catchy name. It makes great business sense to consider using their service, to increase the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns.
